First Stage Engines, Saturn V

So many of the HDR images we see these days are color and, frankly, rather oversaturated. The same techniques can, however, be used very effectively to create striking monochrome images. This image of the first stage engines of the Saturn V rocket at Johnson Space Center, Houston is a 3 exposure (-2, 0, +2) HDR tone mapped in Photomatix then processed in Lightroom. The output from Photomatix was color but I reduced the image to black and white in Lightroom, favouring the channel with the highest contrast. Increasing the “fill light” helped accentuate the great texture inside the nozzle.
